Clearance

Warehouse clear height and rack layout

Distinguish building height from the usable warehouse envelope before coordinating racks, handling equipment and overhead systems.

Ask for the usable clearance under the structure and services, not just the eave height. Review it with the rack and handling-equipment suppliers before settling on the building.

Start with the storage method

Describe products, load units, rack concepts and handling equipment. Give the warehouse designer the supplier documentation and intended operating arrangement. Have qualified storage-system and equipment professionals review capacity and operating clearances rather than selecting a height from a product brochure alone.

Distinguish current storage from an expansion scenario. The team can then evaluate what should be included now and what remains a future possibility.

Request coordinated sections

A floor plan cannot show all overhead conflicts. Ask for sections showing the structural depth, roof profile, proposed services and storage envelope. Label eave height, clear height and critical working zones separately.

Identify suspended or rooftop equipment early. Ask who supplies load information and who coordinates supports and penetrations. Adding equipment later should trigger review rather than assumptions about spare capacity.

Compare the same usable volume

When reviewing alternative shells, hold the operational requirements constant. A taller exterior dimension does not automatically create more usable storage if the internal arrangement changes.
